“My Purpose Is Always to Write History”——A Study on an Erich Auerbach’s Academic Self-report

奥尔巴赫的遗著《文学语言及其受众》中有一则导言名为《目的与方法》。奥氏这篇几乎绝无仅有的学术自述,既旗帜鲜明地表明了他与语文学同行在学术目的上的根本不同,同时又为自己总是从断章出发写作文学史做了强有力的辩护。本论文通过文本细读,从奥尔巴赫与德国历史主义、启蒙主义的不同入手,关注他书写文学史的思想动因,特别是他与维柯新科学的联系。在此基础上,进而讨论其文学方法论对我们的重要启发意义,彰显这位特殊主义者的决定论思想特质。

Auerbach’s posthumous work Literary Language and Its Public has an introduction titled“Purpose and Method”.This almost unique academic self-report of him not only clearly shows that he is fundamentally different from his counterparts of philologist,but at the same time makes a strong defense for his unusual way of writing literary history out of specific text.This paper tries to further reveal the inner logic of his literary thoughts by firstly differentiating his thoughts both from German Historicism and from Enlightenment,and then by tracing back his interpretation on Vico’s New Science.And the great importance of his literary methodology goes together with reconciliation between particularism and determinism,with integrity between philosophy of philology and philology of philosophy.
