Randolph Caldecott is one of the most outstanding illustrators of children′s literature in late Victorian era.He explored and successfully practiced the integrated narration of pictures and words in picture books.The illustrations in his classic picture books contain complex and diverse narrative forms,which are embodied in four main graphic ideographic forms:the life narrative form based on the description of common people and events,the detailed narrative form based on the interpretation of stories with supplementary words,the interesting narrative form based on children′s perspective and the dynamic narrative form based on complex and simple combination of alternating colors.The research on Caldecott′s picture books is fundamental for readers to learn about the artistic features and narrative forms in the early developmental stage of modern pictures.
