In his novel Al-Sabiliat, the Kuwaiti novelist Ismail Fahd Ismail tells a story about an old woman’s journey back to her hometown Al-Sabiliat during the IranIraq War. This novel enriches Arabic eco-literature with an ecological consciousness that transcends nationalism. This article examines the awareness of ecological crisis displayed in this novel and its social and historical context, and analyzes the novel’s depiction of a restoration of destroyed homeland via positive human intervention and the re-enchantment of nature. Ismail’s war writing does not so much focus on an antagonistic relationship between war criminals and victims as offer an in-depth exploration of the relationship between war and the whole ecosystem. This novel reflects on the role of humanity within the ecosystem and calls for a holistic view of harmony and unity between humanity and nature.
