The Origin of the Lacquer Storage Boxes for Ear Cups

漆耳杯盒为存储耳杯的一类漆器,出现于战国早期,发展于战国晚期至秦,成熟于汉,汉以后日渐式微。战国、秦至汉代初期的耳杯盒主要出土于两湖地区,均为上下对合式,器形从狭长形逐渐演变为椭圆近圆形。西汉中期以后,江淮地区亦出现了耳杯盒,但为奁式耳杯盒,呈现出与两湖地区迥异的风格,体现了汉文化背景下漆艺的地域差异。

The lacquer storage boxes for ear cups appeared in the early of the Warring States. Growing from the late Warring States to the Qin, they became fully developed in the Han dynasty but declined after the Han. The boxes dated to the Warring States, Qin and early Han were mainly unearthed from Hunan and Hubei region. All of them were of the upper and lower pair type with the shape evolving from a long and narrow rectangular to an oval or a circular. From the middle of the Western Han, this type of storage boxes also appeared in the Jianghuai region but in a form similar to the lian-container, significantly different from those seen in Hunan and Hubei, reflecting the differences of local lacquer art in the Han dynasty.
