Symbol,Meaning and Our World:An Interview with Zhao Yiheng

赵毅衡先生是中国符号学领军人物之一,自2005年以来开创的“中国符号学西部学派”在符号学领域取得了令人瞩目的成果。回顾过去20年的研究,他提出应明确符号学有别于单纯方法论,从而深入探究符号与意义、文化乃至人类整体精神活动之间的深刻联系:文化因符号的衍义能力而繁荣,因元语言的维持力量而存续。在理清该联系的基础上,他进一步探讨了符号危机给现代人的身份和自我乃至现代文化带来的剧烈动荡,并指出符号学的理解将有助于现代人缓解这一危机。

Professor Zhao Yiheng is a leading scholar in the field of Semiotics in China.The West School he established in 2005 has made remarkable achievements since then.Looking back on his research over the past 20 years,Zhao points out that it’s necessary to treat Semiotics as a complex and overall world view instead of a simple and specific methodology.By doing so,we may be able to look into the fundamental relationship between symbol,meaning,culture,and even human’s entire mental activities.The infinite semiosis gives rise to the prosperous culture,while the meta language sustains that prosperity.Based on the relationship,Zhao probes into the turbulence that the symbolic crisis brings to modern identity,ego and culture,and discusses the possible comprehension as well as solution which Semiotics might provide with.
