摘要
奥登的首部诗剧《两败俱伤》极富实验性,打破了20世纪早期英语诗剧的惨淡局面。与此前的诗剧相比,《两败俱伤》在主题、创作手法和语言风格上都做出了很大的革新,革新的目的和方向则是由奥登的戏剧观决定的。《两败俱伤》是现代英国诗剧史上第一部实现了诗与现代经验相结合的作品,为英国现代诗剧的发展提供了一个重要坐标。
With its bold experimentation, Auden’s first play, Paid on Both Sides, brought something new to the bleak prospect of English verse drama in the early 20th century. Compared with the verse plays written before, Paid on Both Sides has made great innovations in its theme, techniques and language, and the rationale behind Auden’s innovations is his view of what drama should do. Paid on Both Sides is the first work in the history of modern English verse drama to realize the combination of poetry and modern experience and it provides important inspiration for writers of modern English poetic drama after him.
