查尔斯·哈维·布朗是20世纪美国大学图书馆史上重要的图书馆教育家,其职业生涯长达半个世纪,为推动艾奥瓦州立学院图书馆乃至美国大学图书馆事业的整体发展作出了卓越的历史贡献。布朗主管艾奥瓦州立学院图书馆期间积极推进图书馆藏科学化,图书馆建筑专业化,完善图书馆在人员招募、财务预算和图书流通等内部管理制度,构建大学图书馆课程教育体系,努力提升大学图书馆在教育教学中的地位。为推进大学图书馆职业化进程,布朗还积极参与创建了学院和参考图书馆协会,维护了美国图书馆协会的完整性。在大学图书馆理论建设方面,布朗撰写了以《科学丛书》《高校图书馆流通工作》等为代表的经典论著,对当代大学图书馆建设仍然具有重要的启发意义。

Charles Harvey Brown was an important library educator in the history of American college libraries in the 20th century,with a career spanning half a century.He has made outstanding historical contributions to the development and progress of the Iowa State College Library and the American university libraries.When Brown was in charge of the Iowa State College Library,he actively promoted the scientificization of library collections and the professionalization of library buildings,improved the internal management system of uni⁃versity libraries in personnel recruitment,financial budgeting and book circulation,constructed a university library curriculum education system,and strived to improve the position of university library in education and teaching.In order to promote the professionalization of university libraries,Brown also actively partici⁃pated in the creation of the Association of College and Reference Libraries,maintaining the integrity of the American Library Association.In the aspect of theoretical construction of University library,Brown wrote the classic treatises represented by the Science Series,University Library Circulation Work,which still has important enlightening significance to the construction of contemporary university library.
