摘要
文章通过多方考证史料,梳理英国牛津大学出版社在华经营的历史脉络。牛津大学出版社早在20世纪初期即开始对中国市场的探索,初期与上海广学会初步合作,后来分别与广学书局、广协书局进行了为期约20年的合作,除了销售牛津大学出版社的英文原版书,还翻译出版了包括“海族志丛书”“牛津大学实业丛书”等中文版图书,以及出版牛津大学出版社英文原版书和介绍中国情况的中文版图书。虽然牛津大学出版社早期在华业务并未取得显著的业绩,但凸显20世纪上半叶近代西方出版社开拓中国市场和东亚市场的一个侧面。
The article analyses the historical context of the operation of Oxford University Press in China through various textual research and historical materials.Oxford University Press began to explore the Chinese market as early as in the early 20th century.It initially cooperated with Christian Literature Society,and then cooperated with Kwang Hsueh Publishing House for about 20 years.In addition to selling the original English books published by Oxford University Press,it translated and published the Chinese versions of the books including The Wonders of the Sea Series and Oxford Industrial Readers,and published the original English books of Oxford University Press and the Chinese versions of the books introducing China.Although Oxford University Press did not make significant achievements in its early business in China,it highlighted one aspect of the development of the Chinese market and the East Asian market expanded by modern western major publishing houses in the first half of the 20th century.
