The Duality of Space of Chinese Relationships in the English-language Literature as Written by the New Generation of Chinese American Women

美国华裔新生代女性作家英文作品中的中国关系空间呈现出一种异于以往美国华裔文学中的中国关系空间的风貌,这与新生代作家们的思辨性思维和文化底色的自信有着重要的关系。美国华裔新生代女作家的英文作品中所展现的中国关系空间,主要涉及家庭关系、教育关系和我与“祖国”的关系。在美国华裔新生代女性作家的英文作品中,中国关系空间既是这几种社会关系相互碰触、相互对位的场所,同时也是它们相互对话、相互作用的场所。因而,无论是家庭关系中的父母与子女的关系,还是教育关系中的中西教育理念关系与教育空间的关系,或是我与“祖国”的关系中的个体认知与集体记忆的关系,在历时和共时的维度上,都呈现出互抗互通的二重性特征。意识到这种二重性特征,从而在作品中立体地展现中国传统文化与现代文明交融生成的中国关系空间的张力,正是这些作品的独特之境。

The space of Chinese relationships in the new generation of Chinese women writers has shown features that are different from those of the space of Chinese relationships in the past Chinese American literature, which is significantly related to the speculative thinking and culturally based confidence. The space of Chinese relationships as shown in the English works of the new generation of Chinese American women writers mainly involves family relationships, educational relationships and the relationship of the ’I’ with the motherland. In their English works, the space of Chinese relationships is the mutual conflicts and mutual opposition of these relationships but is also a site for their mutual dialogues and interaction.For this reason, whether the family relationship involves that of the father and the mother with their children, whether the educational relationship involves that between Chinese-Western concepts of education and the space of education or whether my relationship with my motherland involves that between individual cognition and collective memory, a feature of duality involving mutual opposition and mutual connection is revealed in the diachronic and synchronic dimensions.What is unique about the space of Chinese relationships in the English works of the new generation of Chinese American women writers is the awareness of this duality that makes it possible for them to three-dimensionally exhibit the tension of the space of Chinese relationships as generated by traditional Chinese culture and modern civilisation.
