In his new novel, Interior Chinatown, Charles Yu, a Chinese American writer, constructs a number of textual spaces in a narrative mode of juxtaposition. With reference to Foucault’s philosophical theory of dystopia and microphysics of power, and rethinking the power relationship behind the space, one can, on a deeper level, reveal the spatial metaphor in the novel: mainstream American society, with the power of white males as its centre, has successfully established a multileveled spatial network of dystopia in terms of geography, discourse, society and psychology, targeting specifically the Asian community while applying discipline and self discipline through the microphysics of power. On the other hand, Asian Americans need to reposition their space of self-identity and unite with other ethnic minorities and marginal groups in order to create an impact on the whole system of discipline.
