Charles,the protagonist of the novel The Sea,The Sea,tries to restore an equal love relationship with his first love,Hartley.Why does he imprison her in the end?Through the macro perspective of urban-rural relations,a new understanding of the theme of"home"in the novel can be obtained,which can provide new explanations for the above problem.Charles went to London because of the urban-rural disparity,and returned to the countryside because he was lost in the city.This process of spatial transformation witnessed the reproduction of his alienated interpersonal relationships and declared the complete failure of his attempt to return"home".By using Lefebvre's space theory to interpret how Charles'alienated interpersonal relationship was reproduced,it found that Charles suppressed other narrative voices with false rationality by taking diary as representation of space,endowing himself with the legitimacy of imprisoning Hartley nominally,and then imprisoned her practically by taking the seaside house Shruff End as representational space.Through a series of urban-rural spatial transformation of Charles,the author shows people's efforts and disappointment to return to their"homes"in the context of modernity and urbanization,and provides possible solutions to this spiritual crisis.
