The Question of Chinese Literature in “World Literature”

“世界文学”从一开始主要是指称欧洲诸国的文学。相比之下,处于欧洲诸国文化之外的中国文学无疑是一个“他者”或“另类”。这一现状决定了“中国文学”试图成为“世界文学”的一个构成因子时,不得不考虑如何被西方文化所接纳。这种有条件性地输出导致了中国文学在走向“世界文学”的过程中不得不发生某种内容与形式上的变异。因此说,中国文学的问题还并不完全是中国的本土问题,还应该考虑、调整与发展“世界文学”这个概念的内涵与外延,使其能成为一个真正涵盖不同国家、不同民族、不同地域和不同语言的文学集合。

“World literature”is mainly referred to the literatures of European countries from the beginning. In contrast,Chinese literature outside the cultures of European countries is undoubtedly an“other”or an“alternative”. This situation indicates that“Chinese Literature”has to consider how to be accepted by western culture when it attempts to become a constituent factor of “world literature”. This conditional output has led to some variation in content and form in the process of Chinese literature moving towards“world literature”. In this sense,the problem of Chinese literature is not entirely China’s local problem. The connotation and extension of the concept of“world literature”are to be adjusted and developed and therefore,to make it a concept of a literary collection that truly covers different countries,nationalities,regions and languages.
