保持和增强场地公园般的感觉是更换卡尔·桑德堡小学的核心。一棵七十岁的大叶枫树林是校园的特色,而与自然界建立了一个物理和视觉的连接是这所学校设计的关键。学校设有一系列的学习“社区”与宽敞的公共空间整合是可以适应现在和未来的课程需求。每三至四个教室的社区围绕着一个合作的,专题式学习的空间,小组学习的空间和教师规划区。这些空间之间的透明度扩展教室,允许大大小小的团体活动在相邻的共享区域内发生。这种教室和共享区域混合的配置不但允许学生今日的灵活性,也能够适应未来的任何程序或功能要求。
