From Morris to Tschichold:A Brief Discussion on the Origin of Medieval Manuscripts of Modern Western Typography

近现代西方设计师通过对中世纪抄本的持续学习与研究,推进了版式设计的发展。其中以威廉·莫里斯和杨·奇肖尔德二人的贡献最为显著。莫里斯总结提炼了中世纪抄本的美学范式并运用于书籍设计;奇肖尔德用更为客观理性的设计语言对中世纪抄本版式进行了重构。两者的成果均反映了中世纪抄本之于现代西方书籍版式设计的根源性地位。

Modern Western designers have advanced the development of typographic design through continuous study and research on medieval manuscripts.Among them,the contributions of William Morris and Jan Tschichold are the most typical.Morris summarized and refined the aesthetic paradigm of medieval manuscripts and applied them to book design;Tschichold reconstructed the layout of medieval manuscripts with a more objective and rational design.Both reflect the fundamental role of medieval manuscripts in the design of modern Western book layouts.
