Between the County Magistrates and the “Antizen”——A Review of Grassroots Organizations and Rural Social Management in Qing Dynasty

通过爬梳巨量系统原始档案,苟德仪教授的新著《清代基层组织与乡村社会管理》以南部县为中心,直面保甲、里甲(排)、乡约、团练等清代乡村社会中的各类基层组织,对其人员构成、制度来源、经费筹集、运作流程等做了精深讨论。全书考证详致、持论平正、个案与宏观有机结合,较大程度推进了对相关旧论题的认知,同时还掘发了新课题,但在分类及某些论证细节上仍有改进余地。在学界日益重视中国自身历史资源的当下,该书的出版可能会有学科超越的意义。

Through sorting out a huge amount of original system files, Professor Gou Deyi’s new book named Organizations and Rural Social Management in Qing Dynasty has focused on Nanbu County, and directly discussed various grassroots organizations in rural society of the Qing Dynasty, such as Baojia, Lijia(platoon), Xiangyue and Tuanlian, and made an in-depth discussion on their personnel composition, system sources, fund raising and operation procedures. The textual research in this book is detailed, the theory is balanced, and the organic combination of cases and macroscopies has promoted the cognition of relevant old topics to a large extent. At the same time, new topics have been explored, but there is still room for improvement in classification and some argumentation details. The publication of this book may have the significance of transcending the discipline at a time when the academic circle has increasingly attached importance to China’s own historical resources.
