在世界风景园林漫长的发展历史中,中国是产生独特思想和优秀作品的主要国家之一,而杭州是一座集中体现中国风景园林发展辉煌成就的城市。杭州或许是世界上景观规划历史最悠久的城市。早在4000~5000年前,良渚人就在如今杭州城西北方向的山前地区修建了大规模的塘坝系统,蓄积山水形成了良渚古城的西湖,用于防洪和灌溉稻田,也使得良渚城与山-湖-田融为一体。尽管后来良渚人建造的陂塘城池湮灭在历史的长河之中,但是良渚人的智慧在后世却得到不断发展完善。到了隋唐时期,杭州人改造了钱塘江边的湖荡滩涂,在山脚下筑堤蓄水,营建了杭州的西湖。像良渚的西湖一样,杭州西湖最初也是一个依据自然条件人工建造的水利工程,经过后代的不断疏浚、建设、完善及文化浸染,这个最初以防洪、提供城市水源及满足农业灌溉的功能性水库,逐渐演变为自然与人文交相辉映、具有浓厚诗意的风景胜地。

In the long history of the development of landscape architecture in the world,China is one of the main countries that produce unique ideas and excellent works,and Hangzhou is a city that embodies the brilliant achievements of the development of Chinese landscape architecture.Hangzhou is perhaps the city with the longest history of landscape planning in the world.As early as 4,000-5,000 years ago,Liangzhu people built a large-scale system of ponds and dams in the piedmont area to the northwest of what is now Hangzhou City.The mountain water was accumulated into the West Lake of Liangzhu Ancient City,for flood control and paddy field irrigation,making the city integrated with the mountain-lakefield.Although the ponds and dams and city built by Liangzhu people was annihilated in the long river of history,Liangzhu people's wisdom has been continuously developed and improved in later generations.In Sui and Tang Dynasties,Hangzhou people transformed the lakes and tidal flats along Qiantang River,built embankments at the foot of the mountain to store water,and built the West Lake in Hangzhou.Like the West Lake in Liangzhu,Hangzhou West Lake was originally a water conservancy project constructed according to natural conditions.After continuous dredging,construction,improvement and cultural infiltration by later generations,the originally functional reservoir for flood control,urban water supply and agricultural irrigation has gradually evolved into a scenic spot with profound poetic beauty with nature and humanities complementing each other.
