This paper proposes that to truly understand a translation theory, a better way is to read the theorist’s own translations, as well as his theory. The essence of Jin Di’s equivalent effect translation theory is to respect the concrete facts of the original text. The paper expounds Jin’s theory through criticism of a highly claimed translation and students’ homework, and clarifies some misunderstandings, such as Jin is a rigidly literal translator.
