The Relationship between Fray Domingo Navarrete and John Locke’s“Notes on China”

洛克是17世纪英国著名的启蒙思想家之一。他的“中国笔记”大约完成于1702年,主要内容涉及中国的儒家思想、祭祀礼仪等。这部笔记可谓洛克“中国观”的集中体现。《华人礼仪史》虽是洛克“中国笔记”的直接知识来源,但它对闵明我的著作也多有引用。因此洛克的笔记内容与闵明我的著述之间存在内部联系。闵明我的思想观念对洛克产生了一定影响,从而成为欧洲启蒙运动与中国思想发生关联的途径之一。

John Locke was one of the famous enlightenment thinkers in 17 th century England.His“Notes on China”written around 1702,mainly dealt with Chinese religious sects,Confucianism,sacrificial rites and so on,which can be regarded as a concentrated reflection of Locke’s view on China.Although Historia cultus sinensium by Giovanni Giacomo Fatinelli is the direct source of Locke’s“Notes on China”,the latter also contains many references to the work of Fray Domingo Navarrete.Therefore,the content of Lock’s work is internally linked to Navarrete’s writings.Navarrete’s ideas had some influence on Locke,and objectively contributed to the development of the European Enlightenment.
