How to develop early childhood reading education in a more prudent and confident manner in the Chinese cultural and educational context is a question that demands careful consideration from contemporary educators in China, both in theory and practice. This paper attempts to delineate and elaborate on three educational needs in the Chinese context based on existing literature, namely the need to move from a focus on shared reading education to a focus on instructive reading education, the need to move from advocating social reading education to elevating the professional level of reading instruction, and the need to move from an emphasis on the popularization,of reading education to an emphasis on interventions for early childhood reading difficulties. It is hoped that this elaboration can inspire an in-depth discussion in educational circles and that through the consistent efforts of Chinese educators, the reading education needs of Chinese children will be explored further and early reading education in China will be steadily developed.
