Ethics has always been one of the core issues in George Eliot’s works.In Silas Marner,George Eliot makes a deep psychological observation and analysis of the characters,depicts the ethical taboos violated by the protagonist Silas Marner and the ethical betrayal made by Godfrey,the son of the squire,and puts them in ethical chaos.Because of their different ethical choices,they finally get different ethical identities and different life outcomes.Eliot,who has a strong concern for ethics and morality,finally through Marner’s ethical redemption emphasizes that people can be redeemed by the perception of life and ethical relationship based on love and dedication.
