Li Chonghua’s Discussion on Tang and Song Poetry

李重华是清前期著名的诗论家,他的《贞一斋诗说》在清代诗论中占有重要的地位,受到学术界的关注。在清代前期“尊唐”与“趋宋”之争中,李重华能摆脱二元对立的思维方式,总结了唐代古体诗古朴、厚重的风格特色,在肯定五言、七言古诗的基础上,赞扬了唐代近体诗的辉煌;也看到了宋诗对于唐诗的吸收与突破,并认同宋诗多抒议论、重视义理、风格质朴的特色,同时对西昆、江西诗派提出批评。李重华对唐、宋诗的评价,为后世探究唐宋诗的理论价值提供了范本。

Li Chonghua was a famous poetic theorist in the early Qing Dynasty, and his book Remarks on Poetry in Zhenyizhai occupied an important position in the poetics of the Qing Dynasty, and has attracted the attention of academia. Facing the dispute between “respecting Tang poetry” and “tending to Song Poetry” in the early Qing Dynasty, Li Chonghua got rid of the dualistic thinking mode. He summed up the quaint, simple and profound style of ancient-style poetry in the Tang Dynasty, on the basis of affirming the five character and seven character ancient-style poetry, he praised the brilliance of recent-style poetry in the Tang Dynasty. At the same time, he also noticed the absorption and breakthrough of Song poetry to Tang poetry. He agreed with the characteristics of Song poetry, which expressed more comments, attached importance to principle, and had a plain style, and he criticized Xikun and Jiangxi poetry schools. Li Chonghua’s evaluation of Tang poetry and Song poetry provides a model for future generations to explore the theoretical value of Tang and Song poetry.
