David Lodge’s Small World is a typical post-modernist novel, which demonstrates the characteristics of post-modernist culture, such as anti-authority, fragmentation and lack of depth. However, it also shows the lofty spirit of “tireless pursuit” in the western cultural tradition. When reading Small World, we should pay attention to such “double themes” of the work, and further think about the cultural connotation of post-modernist novels.
