In 2018-2019,the joint archaeological team led by the Xi’an Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics Conservation and Archaeology excavated 549 Qin tombs at the Qingliangshan cemetery. The excavation yielded a large number of artifacts, close to 2000 pieces. This cemetery is located at the core area of the so-called Du ting county.Material evidence also shows a complex ethnic affiliation of the tomb owners. These burials belong to medium-lower rank members of the society, and the overall layout of the cemetery shows a careful planning beforehand. In addition, some remains present cultural elements derived from the Chu state.Typologically, these burials date from the middle to late Warring States period to the period of Qin’s unification. The authors argue that this cemetery has been well planned and demonstrates various cultural elements of the time. While it is not a typical Qin cemetery, this new discovery illustrates the pragmatic, open and compatible nature of the Qin state.
