《如来藏经》不仅为现存最早的汉译如来藏系经典,也是成书最早的如来藏系经典之一。该经仅有短短的一卷,同后期的如来藏系经典相比,虽然其系统性、思辨性皆有不及,但该经对如来藏思想在汉地的传播却有着举足轻重的作用。该经不仅在当时的佛教思想界引起了广泛的关注,也为如来藏思想在后世成为中国佛学的主流奠定了基础。

The Tathāgatagarbhasūtra is not only the earliest extant Chinese translation of the tathāgatagarbha scriptures,but also one of the earliest tathāgatagarbha scriptures.The sūtra has only a short volume.Compared with the later tathāgatagarbha scriptures,although it is less systematic and speculative,it plays an important role in the dissemination of tathāgatagarbha theory in China.It not only aroused the extensive attention of Chinese Buddhist thinkers to the issues of tathāgatagarbha,buddha-dhātu and dharma-kāya,but also led to a great discussion on buddha-dhātu in the Northern and Southern Dynasties,which also laid a foundation for tathāgatagarbha theory to become the mainstream of Chinese Buddhism.
