This article examines the spatial relationship of Shenyuan Garden(Garden of the Shen Family)with the walled city of Shaoxing Prefecture during the Song Dynasty(960–1279 CE).In ancient Chinese local chronicles, the character fu(prefecture)might refer to the government house of the prefecture within the city(fuzhi)rather than the walled city of the prefecture(fucheng),while other locations were identified with orientations centred around the government house. The distance between the government house of Shaoxing Prefecture and Yuji Temple(Temple of Dayu’s Trace)near Shenyuan Garden,as seen on ancient maps and a modern cadastral map from 1939,could further substantiate this argument. The results show that Shenyuan Garden has existed in its current location within the walled city of Shaoxing since the Song Dynasty.
