中国古代音乐文化的发展与中西音乐文化之间的交流密不可分。丝绸之路作为中西文化交流的要道,也是中西音乐文化交流的主要渠道。汉唐之际是中西音乐文化交流的重要时期。国家间的使节、音乐艺人以及粟特商人的交流是音乐交流的主要人群,汉唐之际大量西域乐器流入中原地区,受到广泛欢迎,西域乐理乐曲也随之传入,并与中原地区的乐曲相互融合,促进了中西音乐的进一步发展。中西间的音乐文化交流是双向的,同一时期大量的中原乐器和乐曲也传播到了西域、日本和朝鲜半岛,中外的音乐文化交流互动使各地区的音乐文化得到了进一步发展。
