Newspaper Novels on Various States of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty in the Late Qing Dynasty

东周列国题材报刊小说是晚清报刊小说不可或缺的一部分。由于春秋战国与清末皆属于社会大变革时期,历史的相似性使得清末报刊小说中出现了不少以东周列国为题材的作品,借助东周列国的历史外壳,表现清末时政及社会状况。这些作品主要有三种类型:借鉴传统小说编撰手法之作、翻新小说、翻译文言典籍之作,总体呈现出与此前同题材作品较大的区别。清末东周列国题材报刊小说的繁荣与“小说界革命”的爆发、读者阅读习惯和审美倾向的转变以及域外小说的传入等因素息息相关。

The newspaper novels on various states of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty were an indispensable part of the newspaper novels of the late Qing Dynasty.Since the Eastern Zhou Dynasty and the late Qing Dynasty both belong to the period of great social change,the historical similarity makes the late Qing Dynasty newspaper novels appeared a lot of works with the Eastern Zhou Dynasty as the theme.With the help of the historical shell of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty,these works showed the political and social conditions of the late Qing Dynasty.The novels mainly fall into three types:drawing on traditional novel compilation techniques,renovating former novels and translating Chinese classics.Generally,they showed great differences from previous works of the same themes.The prosperity of the newspaper novels on various states of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty in the late Qing Dynasty was closely related to the outbreak of the“novel revolution”,the change of readers’reading habits and aesthetic tendencies,and the introduction of foreign novels.
