The Survival Strategies of Chaozhou Shantang in Singapore During 1942—1945

新加坡中华善堂蓝十救济总会及其属下10间善堂是以潮州人为主的社团组织,在当代新加坡慈善事业中扮演着重要角色,同时又与中国及东南亚其他慈善组织关系密切。新加坡潮人善堂源于中国潮汕地区,多崇祀宋大峰祖师,并秉承传统的赠医施药、施棺赠葬、救灾恤难等社会慈善职能。追溯历史,1942—1945年,潮人善堂在日本占领新加坡的危机下,组织成立中华善堂蓝十救济总会,在危机社会中寻求因应之策。

The Blue Cross Charitable Institution,Singapore and its ten branch shantang(charitable halls),organizations mainly constituted by Chaopeople,play an important role in contemporary Singapore philanthropy and,at the same time,have close ties with other charitable organizations in China and Southeast Asia.The shantang of Chao-people in Singapore originated from China’s Chao-Shan area and worshiped Master Song Dafeng.They have been adhering to traditional philanthropic functions such as donating medicines,offering coffins and burials,and providing disaster relief.During the crisis of the Japanese occupation of Singapore from 1942 to 1945,the shantang of Chao-people established the Blue Cross Charitable Institution to seek countermeasures in the crisis-ridden society.
