Impressionistic Elements in O. Henrys′ Works:The Furnished Room

欧·亨利的短篇小说大多以现实主义或批判现实主义见长,但是《带家具出租的房间》却属另类。在这篇作品里,欧·亨利引入印象主义笔法,从视觉、听觉、嗅觉诸方面入手,通过描写主人公的印象、心绪、意识和感觉来推动情节进展。作品中大量运用移情,侧重人物心态与周围环境之间的感应和投射;此外,联觉的恰当运用更加全面准确地反映了主人公的复杂心情与多重感受,进一步烘托出忧郁凄美的悲剧氛围。

Most short stories by O. Henry belong to the realm of realism or critical realism, but The Furnished Room is an exception. In this story, O. Henry has drawn in some impressionistic techniques and made full exploitation of them to push forward the plot through describing the hero′s mood, mentality, feelings, and impressions got from all his senses, and transference is widely used in this piece of work, with a focus on the interaction between the character′s mindset and the environment. Besides, by using the means of synesthesia properly, the author depicts thoroughly and accurately the hero′s complex sensations and feelings and thus sets off the tragic atmosphere of melancholy and beauty, making the story a more impressive tragedy.
