"Vaishali’s Loss of Her Sons" in the Tuyugou and Kizil Murals—— Discussing the Limitations and Possibilities of the Study of Qiuci Murals

吐峪沟、克孜尔石窟壁画中有一类佛说法图,描绘世尊与女子面对一只打开的箱函,箱函中露出若干人头。参考《贤愚经》,壁画内容可比定为“毗舍离丧子缘”。图像再现波斯匿王斩首毗舍离三十二子,毗舍离开函见子头颅之景。

Among the murals of Tuyugou and the Kizil Caves, there is one kind of depiction of Buddha preaching,in which Bhagavat and a woman face an open box containing several heads. A study of The Sutra of the Wise and the Fool will reveal that the content of the mural may be defined as "Vaishali’s Loss of Her Sons". The picture represents King Pasenadi beheading the thirty-two sons of Vaishali, confronting her with the sight of her sons’ heads displayed in an open box.
