20世纪20年代美国经济空前繁盛,消费主义和享乐主义盛行,小说《了不起的盖茨比》描写了几个经典人物所代表的社会阶层的生活面貌:新兴的富裕阶层精神无所依附、纸醉金迷;贫穷阶层苦苦挣扎、飞蛾扑火地追逐财富和地位。贪婪的欲望扭曲了人们的灵魂,繁华落幕、曲终人散,各式人物不可避免地走向了悲剧的结局。

In the 1920s,the American economy was unprecedentedly prosperous,and consumerism and hedonism prevailed.This paper discusses that the novel The Great Gatsby describes the life features of the social strata represented by several classic characters:the spirit of the emerging rich class was dependent on nothing,and they were addicted to live a luxury and dissipation life.Meanwhile,the poor class struggled and pursued wealth and status.Greedy desire distorts people’s souls,and all kinds of characters inevitably go to the tragic end.
