How Are We Going to Conduct Area Studies Today?

“区域国别研究”是今日中国社会科学中的一个热门话题。区域国别研究实际上就是一国对于外部世界中各国或地区的知识性探究。它的诞生与发展,中外之理相同,都是源于了解外部世界的需要。它既是一种知识性探索,又往往服务于特定历史条件下的政治与经济社会发展的目的。就学术价值而言,国内开展的区域国别研究,迄今已取得了有目共睹的成绩,它与国家整体的发展进步是相联系的。同时,在不少问题上,也还存在一些混淆和含糊不清的理解。我们承担的一项教育部哲学社会科学研究重大课题将努力回答这些问题。

Area studies is one of the hot topics in Chinese social sciences today.As part of social science research,area studies tries to understand other countries or regions in the outside world and to accumulate academic knowledge.Its birth and development,the same principle at home and abroad,are all derived from the need to know better about the outside world.Area studies is not only an intellectual exploration,but also serves economic,political and social development purposes under specific historical circumstances.Area studies in China has so far achieved considerable progress,and this is closely related to the overall development and progress of the country.In the meantime,there are still some confusions or ambiguous understandings on many issues that need to be clarified.Our major research project supported by the Ministry of Education aims to address all these questions surrounding area studies.
