The Cultural Anxiety of Contemporary Singaporean Chinese from the Film Wet Season

新加坡华人导演陈哲艺执导的电影《热带雨》讲述了中学华文女教师阿玲遭遇婚姻、事业和文化危机的故事,呈现了新加坡华文教育的困境,以及华人所面临的文化失根的尴尬境况。对照影片里新加坡华人文化境况的艺术呈现,探讨现实中新加坡华人群体所面临的“文化焦虑”这一议题,是对“新加坡华人文化该往何处去”的回应。

Wet Season,a film directed by Singaporean Chinese director Zheyi Chen,presents the dilemma of Chinese education in Singapore and the embarrassing situation of cultural loss faced by Singaporean Chinese through the story of Ling,a Chinese teacher in a middle school,who suffers from marriage,career and cultural crisis.Based on the artistic presentation of the cultural situation of the Singaporean Chinese in the film,this paper discusses the issue of cultural anxiety faced by the Singaporean Chinese community in reality,which is a response to where should the Singaporean Chinese culture go.
