Among the many endangered Indian languages in Latin America, Ayapaneco, the local language of the village of Ayapa, Mexico, is on the verge of extinction. It has become an urgent problem how to effectively preserve this language. This article examines the Ayapaneco language from an ecological linguistic perspective, with the aim of exploring the causes of the language’s endangerment and ways to preserve it. The use of Spanish for compulsory education in Mexico, the influx of Spanish speakers to the village of Ayapa in the 1970s, and the negative attitude of the locals toward Ayapaneco are the main reasons for the endangerment of this language. It is currently most important that modern science and technology, such as artificial intelligence, can be used to record, preserve, and analyze this language.
