Protecting the National Body:Standardized Management of"Street Corpses"in Chongqing During Wartime(1939—1945)

1939年,轰炸和疫病使得重庆街头出现大量路毙,这些尸体严重威胁城市环境和居民健康。在多重压力之下,重庆市政府开始对路毙进行规范化管理,逐渐明确了主管机构、办公机构、经费来源和办事细则。整个管理过程呈现明显的协同化、规范化和高效化特点,政府藉此实现了三个维度的“清洁”。在权力机器渗透中,路毙管理实现了“国家化”和“民族化”。

In 1939,the combination of bombing and the epidemic disease resulted in a large number of corpses in the streets of Chongqing,which seriously threatened the urban environment and the health of residents.Under multiple pressures,Chongqing government began to carry out standardized management of street corpses,gradually making the administrative authority,office organization,source of funds and detailed rules clear.The whole street corpses management process were obviously characterized with synergy,standardization and efficiency,and the city government has basically realized the three dimensions of"cleaning".However,in the process of strong infiltration of the state machinery,street corpses gradually got"nationalized"and"ethnic".
