Focusing on the scene of "sitting round a painted, not a burning, fire" in Elizabeth Bowen’ s representative work The Death of the Heart, this paper argues that the novel represents Bowen’ s anxiety over taste and ethics in the early 20 th century Britain, and shows her criticism of the imbalance between taste and ethics.Through this work,Bowen expresses her cultural anxiety over social transition, and her concern displays a representative attitude in the history of British cultural criticism in the 20 th century.
