As a prototypical feminist short story,"A Jury of Her Peers" explores, through a murder case, the weakness of women, the absence of women’ s life in the public sphere of a patriarchal society, and how women can save themselves and help each other under a flawed legal system. This article analyzes the short story from three aspects:gender identity, spatial separation and ethical justice. It argues that the story reveals the subversive power of female community constructed by "sisterhood" against the patriarchal system. It is believed that women’s struggle for their subjective identity and equal rights must be carried out through participation in the public sphere, while preserving their unique femininity so as to facilitate harmonious, pluralistic and inclusive gender relations through adequate communication and exchange of views with male society.
