The Tacitus is the second monograph of Ronald Syme, the British historian on Roman history. It represents the highest achievement of Syme’s academic career. The Tacitus inherits the British humanist narrative historiography in The Roman Revolution, and developed its prosopography.Influenced by both the traditional classical philology and the contemporary trend of the Linguistic Turn, the textual analysis in the Tacitus adopts one type of eclecticism.Today,Syme’s Tacitus remains a key reference for the study of Tacitus the historian and the early Roman Empire, and provides valuable clues for the further study of the Latin historiography.
