Yang Yinchuan, who lived in Luzhi, Jiangnan in the late Qing Dynasty, was the discoverer of remnants of the book Six Records of Floating Life and the promoter of its publication. He is the brother-in-law of Wang Tao, a Chinese thinker and publisher who introduced Western ideas to China. He and Wang Tao had a long history of sharing ideas and influences on each other. As such, the study of Yang Yinchuan, particularly that of his family background, life experience, and social relations;is another way to retrospectively study Wang Tao and other late Qing port intellectuals who were constrained by traditional culture, and then to explore the behavioral logic of their relationships with tradition and reality. Moreover, it also engages the mental journey experienced by the pan-port intellectuals in Jiangnan society at a time of great change in the world. Based on the newly discovered historical materials, this paper compiles a brief table of Yang Yinchuan’s biography, and helps restore the historical relationship between him and Ba Jin’s great-grandfather, Li Fan.
