Mending Fences Between the Royal Families of LI and WU—Also on WU Zetian′s Political Orientation in Her Late Years

武周的皇位继承人问题与李武二族的关系是武则天晚年关心的核心问题之一,实施的大政方针多是围绕此展开,基本政治取向是弥合李武。无论是武则天晚年兼容佛道的宗教倾向,还是对部分人事任命的谋划,都是为弥合李武服务的,尤其是武则天对于张易之﹑张昌宗兄弟的政治安排,某种程度上仍是为了调和李武矛盾,以期自己百年之后二者能相容无争。

The problem of who would be the heir and the relationship between the heir and the two royal families of LI and WU was one of the core issues that WU Zetian cared much about in her late years,and her major policy was mainly designed around it.WU Zetian′s basic political orientation was to heal the discord between LI and WU in the late years of her reign.Starting from this point,we can detect whether it was WU Zetian′s compatible tendency of Buddhism or her planning on some personnel appointments,especially her political arrangements for the specific brothers of ZHANG Yizhi and ZHANG Changzong,that were made,to some extent,to mediate the contradictions between LI and WU,with the hope that the two families can allow themselves without strife after her death.
