Integration of “Language” and “Society”: A New Focus of Sociolinguistic Research and Theorization

社会语言学长久以来被认为是研究语言与社会二者之间关系的学问,然而,这种预设出“语言”与“社会”彼此分离而独立存在的观点在21世纪的社会语言学和语言人类学研究中受到质疑。本文通过梳理社会语言学经典和前沿文献,发现社会语言学已经将“语言”与“社会”互融为一个整体进行研究,而将二者融为一体的“胶粘剂”则是“语言意识形态”概念,以及后续发展出的一套新概念和新理论。文章详细阐述这一研究发现过程,认为“语言”与“社会”互融为一体并作为社会语言学核心课题,对认识社会语言学的理论焦点和进行社会语言学理论创新具有启示和意义。

Sociolinguistics has long been conceptualized as a disciplinary study of the relation between language and society,but this conceptualization has been challenged in the 21^(st) sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology for having taken“language”and“society”as separated.In reviewing seminal and edge-cutting literature,this article takes on the proposition of sociolinguistics that“language”and“society”be integrated into a whole of linguistic action,the“glue”of which is“language ideology”and the set of recently developed concepts and theories.This new proposition of sociolinguistics is discussed in terms of its emergence and development,so are the implications for the sociolinguistic innovations to be brought about by this new focus of sociolinguistic research and theorization.
