Eastern Ways Spread Westward:A Book Review of the Chinese Version of Francesco Morena’s Chinoiserie:China as Source of Inspiration for European Art from the 13th to the 19th Century

意大利学者佛朗切斯科·莫瑞纳所著《中国风——13世纪~19世纪中国对欧洲艺术的影响》的中文版于2022年与中国读者见面了。此书按照欧洲不同地域和时代划分章节,从装饰艺术品、绘画、室内设计、家具、园林和建筑等方面,梳理了“中国风”现象在欧洲各国兴起、兴盛和衰落的历时八百年漫长且复杂的历史。“中国风”是欧洲艺术家和工匠对中国元素的借鉴和再创作,以此迎合欧洲人的使用需求、审美品味,并塑造出欧洲人眼中理想化的中国形象,它反映了欧洲宫廷皇室和贵族的艺术趣味和风尚。欧洲“中国风”主要涉及器物、室内装饰和园林建筑等方面,对欧洲艺术的重要门类影响是有限的。欧洲“中国风”的兴衰不仅涉及到了欧洲人如何看待异域文明,也反映了他们如何看待其自身的文化传统。

The Chinese version of the book,Chinoiserie:China as Source of Inspiration for European Art from the 13th to the 19th Century,written by the Italian scholar Francesco Morena,met with the Chinese readers in 2022.The book is divided into chapters according to different regions and epochs in Europe,and sorts out the rise,prosperity and development of the Chinoiserie phenomenon in Europe from the aspects of decorative art,painting,interior design,furniture,gardens,architecture,etc.Chinoiserie is the reference and re-creation of Chinese elements by European artists and craftsmen,in order to meet the needs and aesthetic tastes of Europeans,and to create an idealized image of China in the eyes of Europeans.It reflects the artistic taste of European royal families and aristocrats.Chinoiserie mainly involves wares,interior decoration and garden architecture,and has limited influence on important categories of European art.The rise and fall of Chinoiserie not only involves how Europeans view foreign civilizations,but also reflects how they view their own cultural traditions.
