The Swift Pulse belongs to the 28 pulses, which is the latest pulse condition listed in the 28 pulses.Hua Shou in the Yuan Dynasty described the pulse characteristics of the Swift Pulse for the first time. In the Ming Dynasty,Li Zhongzi added the Swift Pulse to 28 pulses in his Zhen Jia Zheng Yan. For the first time, the Swift Pulse was established as a single type of pulse, and its characteristic was pulse rate. Li defined this pulse as having 7 or 8 beats per respiration, and this was used for later generations. The Swift Pulse means extreme yang, depletion of yin, vitality will be lost,or it can also be found in healthy people. Clinically, the disease progression and prognosis can be judged by the Swift Pulse. This article combs through the records of the pulse characteristics and clinical significance of the Swift Pulse in ancient Chinese medical books, modern TCM pulse studies,TCM diagnostics textbooks and modern documents, explores the evolution track of ancient and modern doctors′ understanding of the pulse characteristics and clinical significance of the Swift Pulse, and comparesit with other similar pulses,so as to provide a basis for standardized research, instructional teaching and clinical practice of pulse conditions.
