Mei Yiqi and the Development of Engineering Discipline of Tsinghua University

清华大学的工程教育起步于民国时期成立的工学院,梅贻琦作为清华校史上任职时间最长的校长,凭借富有远见的治校谋略与顺应时势的改革举措,领导创建了工学院,引领推动工程学科建设、人才培养和学术研究等办学实践。在民族危亡的特殊时期,带领清华学人,服务国家需求,广纳工程人才,构建课程体系,做大做强了清华的工程学科,为清华在追求高质量发展的过程中,以建设工程学科为牵引,带动学校综合实力全面提升,进而实现人才强国、科技报国的理想使命,打下了坚实基础,其中的有益经验值得我们探究借鉴。

Engineering education at Tsinghua University started in the School of Engineering established during the Republic of China. As the longest-serving president in the history of Tsinghua University,Mei Yiqi,with his visionary school management strategies and reform measures in line with the times,initiates and directs the establishment of the School of Engineering. He moves and promotes the discipline construction of engineering,personnel training,academic research and school-running practices,etc. During the period of national crisis,he rallies Tsinghua scholars,focuses on serving the needs of the country,recruits engineering talents,sets up the curriculum system,and makes Tsinghua’s engineering discipline bigger and stronger. In the process of pursuing high-level development,Tsinghua University takes the lead in the development of engineering,upgrades the university’s comprehensive strength,and then accomplishes the ideal mission of strengthening the country with talents and serving the country with science and technology. This meaningful experience is important and worthy of our study and use for reference.
