摘要
Almost 60 years after the publication of Kung Chuan Hsiao's seminal work Rural China:Imperial Control in the Nineteenth Century, the book remains the authoritative reference in the study of rural areas in China. The author of Living Near Chang'an,Xu Chang, discussed the local administration of rural areas,as well as patterns of state control over the countryside, and examined both the effects of central rule and the response of the countryside,in ways that can be considered as a faithful continuation ofHsiao'sresearch.
