In Hawthorne’ s romance creations, “My Kinsman, Major Molineux” is one of the most important works that shows Hawthorne’s “poetics of carnival”. In this work, Hawthorne not only describes a detailed scene of carnival in a cross section of history, but diachronically shows the historical trend of the American colony and its influence on the future of colony. Additionally, this work expresses Hawthorne’s unique idea of colonial revolution and American history. By describing a carnivalesque scene in the colonial revolution and highlighting the performance of the young generation in the colony during the carnival, Hawthorne expresses his skepticism about the colonial revolution, demonstrates a deep understanding of darkness within history, and finally shows concerns about the inner spirit of the generation after the revolutionary period.
