Wu Mei’s posthumous manuscript Shuang-ya Qu-hua, which was believed to have never been published publicly, began to be serialized in 1919 in Popular Education Studies(Volume 3-21), a journal conducted by the Popular Education Research Association under the Ministry of Education of Beiyang Government(1912-1928) during the Republic of China. This special serialization not only advanced the release date of Shuang-ya Qu-hua by 70 years, but also linked WU Mei’s interests and academic positions during his stay in Beijing in terms of the activities of the official drama improvement initiated by the Department of Social Education of the Ministry of Education of Beiyang Government. Moreover, it illustrates Wu Mei as an individual different from what he was usually perceived as “silent and marginal”, and provides an opportunity to better understand the scientific nature and a newly re-contextualized systematic writing of Shuang-ya Qu-hua.
