The new audio-visual media represented by short video platforms is a new means of constructing identity. However, the existing research mainly focuses on the social cultural effects with a macro perspective, while the literature on specific individuals and groups in their social situations is still insufficiency. This paper explores new ways of identity on short video platforms, taking the cinephilia short videos as a research case. Using the qualitative method of ethnography and audio-visual text analysis, this paper demonstrated that cinephilia short videos shape and perform video makers’ cinephilia memories, promoting self-presentation by constructing fantasy selves, and then arouse other social network users’ emotional resonance. It is also argued that the making of short video serves as a tool of integrating the experience of different stages of life, helping video makers construct a stable narrative identity. This case study could contribute to the further understanding of the social-cultural functions of short videos, revealing the social process between new media technologies and individual identity practices.
