Chinese Elements and Aesthetic Taste in Roger Fry’s Paintings

罗杰·弗莱一般以美学家和艺术批评家著称,与此同时,他还是一名画家。他所创作的作品有不少与中国艺术相关,最为直接的体现是在他绘画中出现的中国艺术品,从中不但可以看到所展现出的中国元素,而且还可以了解到罗杰·弗莱在中国艺术方面的私人收藏,从而有助于进一步探究中国艺术对他产生的作用与影响。具体而言,表现为以下几点:一是美学趣味的吸纳与观音意象的使用;二是将中国艺术品作为静物道具,探索色彩与空间的关系;三是对中国艺术造型的模仿,深化形式认知;四是对中国艺术技法与美学的借鉴。从中可以看出,罗杰·弗莱通过对中国艺术的关注与学习,以展开自己的学术研究与美学探究,乃至对中国艺术精神与美学思想的吸收,这对他发展形式主义美学理论和艺术批评产生了重要影响。

Roger Fry, known as an art critic and painter, has created many Chinese art-related paintings, the most direct manifestation of which was Chinese artworks depicted in his paintings. These Chinese elements help us know more about his personal collections of Chinese artworks and further explore the influence of Chinese art on him, specifically from the following four aspects: absorbing Chinese aesthetic taste and using guanyin(a Bodhisattva) as an image in his paintings;depicting Chinese artworks in still lifes to explore the relationship between colors and space;imitating images in Chinese paintings to better understand forms;and learning from the techniques and aesthetics of Chinese art. All these show that Roger Fry studied Chinese art to carry out his academic research and aesthetic exploration and absorb its principles and aesthetic thoughts, which has influenced his efforts to develop formalist aesthetic theories and art criticism.
