The Penny Press had the highest circulation in the United States in the late 19th Century and the early 20th Century, and its entertaining nature and consumption value made illustrations an important part of the Press. Artists of the Ashcan School, who were illustrators of the newspaper, provided readers with a splendid, vibrant urban life. As the Penny Press focused on daily lives in cities, the Ashcan School depicted the working class and immigrants, rather than elites and reporters, and demonstrated changes of public space in New York and the rise of female as consumers.
